It's actually quite good. It is very similar to the fairly dubious
shared-world "Bordertown" books, but is clearly *not* set in that
world, and (unlike most of those books) is quite well-written and
great fun.

Btw, as long as we are talking about him, I've read everything of his
except on titled _The Scholars of Night_. Anyone have any clue
what this is about? I could get it on the web, but no description is
provided and I'm uninclined to buy a book while knowing *nothing*
about it (not even whether it is non-fiction, short stories, or a novel).

On a more general topic, I've enjoyed Ford's writing since I ran into
his name attached to several well-done Amber Zones in the old CT
JTAS days, it's good to know he is doing OK.

I noticed that there seems to be some effort afoot to create an
xml dtd for traveller systems. I've been playing around with
one, (included in part two) that I thought people may be
interesting in mining for potentially useful bits.

When I designed it, I decided that the main reasons that
you would need information on a system would be astrographic,
mercantile and social/political. I tried to be as inclusive as
possible, allowing if needed for specification down to lower level
countries, each running multiple space ports. I tried to allow each
polity to have its own individuality, with different facilities, culture,
trade patterns.

FOUR hundred? I thought you said THREE hundred? We've been ripped off!

Someone's been flying the ship backwards through hyperspace to set the
mileometer (lightyearometer?) back...

Note: This ship uses the unofficial fuel in waste space rule.

Designers Notes:

The _Giirukaa_-class Fleet Intruder has its roots in the same premise that led to the development of the _Azhanti High Lightning_-class during the Solomani Rim War: that a class of cruiser fitted with the longest-ranged jump drive available would be of great utility in the border conflicts that have characterized Imperial wars since the Civil War. The design is dominated by powerful J-6 drives and the fuel tankage needed to support them. Not only can the _Giirukaa_-class travel farther in one jump than other warships, its fuel tankage is sufficient to support out-and-back missions up to three parsecs away without refueling.

Naturally, some compromises were required to make space for the 36,000 tons of jump fuel carried by this 60,000-ton ship. The most obvious compromise is the decision to limit acceleration to 4 Gs, to allow the mounting of required fittings, armament, and armor. While this is inferior to the standard 6-G performance of most Imperial cruisers, it exceeds the normal-space performance of the _Azhanti High Lightning_-class by 3 Gs. The _Giirukaa_ class is also slightly undergunned, in comparison with other warships of this size. Despite these factors, the unparalleled strategic mobility of this ship makes the _Giirukaa_-class Fleet Intruder a valuable addition to the Imperial Navy.

[OOC: I chose the name Giirukaa because nearly all AuricTech ships bear names of Terran origin, and I wanted a simple name that sounded Vilani.]

Most recently, a digest was generated every 40-45k or so. Some lists also
generate a digest daily even if there wasn't enough traffic to hit the
threshold (assuming there was any traffic at all).

I don't mind it either way, but if the digests are daily they'll get BIG on
occasion, and a TOC would be nice if that's the case.
Other ideas:
Attach the list sig to the end of the whole digest.
Get the Traveller trademark/copyright notice at the top. Since the digest is
(presumably) the form the list will get archived in, this notice needs to be
there. The one Rob used is:

Yes, you're right, sorry.
I don't know why I thought John Ford was involved.

I think my mind is going, Dave.

It doesn't look valid to me.

Might be better to user a word other than "body" just so we don't get
clashes with
the <body> tag from XHTML. Either that or make sure you define a namespace
for this XML

BTW do yuo have a DTD for this ?

You should make all of diameter, density, mass and gravity either attributes
or seperate tags.

same with temperature and atmosphere

(Reason is if they aren't attributes or tags we can't address them, so we
can't format them properly on output or rterieve them using XQL)

It gets worse...

The Civil War was FIVE hundred years before 1111... (approximately
610-625)

I appreciate all the kind words. But my job was made easy by list members
who keep it reasonably clean and on topic. I've only had to enter into a
couple of disputes/police actions over the past year or so and that's a
tribute to the list members. You guys made it so I didn't need to do much
so the thanks is really to you!

Dan:
You are pinging for penguins. What kind of sonar are you using?
If you do it right you can immobalize them with the sound then tenderize the
meat if the frequency if correct. That way they will float to the surface and
you can collect then, skin them and not have to beat the snake snot out of the
meat to get it ready to cook.

Is there any way we can get the listing of subjects at the beginning of the
digest, like we had with the old TML? Sometimes I just skim the list of
subjects to see if there are any posts (or any post authors) I am interested
in.

Thanks

So, by Traveller Counting Canon(tm), this should therefore be
known as the Nth TML. Followed by the 'Rule of TML', the 'Long
Night of No TML Digests', the re-hosting of the TML at Sylea.com
and the eventual final TML empire, refered to in texts as the
"3rd TML" but which everyone really just calls the TML.

TML 4 is best not mentioned.
TML 5 was OK, but I posted lots of typos to it and some of the stuff I
posted on it was just plain wrong (combustible pure hydrogen, America
buying Siberia...).
I'm looking forward to this TML.

Consider that the type S can be built at TL B (TL A using
book 2) so some of those could be left over from the
interstellar wars period. Why else do you think the IISS is
willing to give those away?

Great. 52K is 1600 lines in the majordomo config. I've set it to 1400
lines to try to get around 32k. Almost there..

That is an outlook Express option only.

I don't believe that Outlook 2000 has this option. In their infinite wisdom,
its programmers make you switch formats manually on every reply to a message
that's not in plaintext. You can set a default for new messages, but replies
*always* come up in the format of the message to which you are replying.

Not being in the office where I can check the actual menu, as far as I can
remember, when you start up a reply, there's a menu item for Format that
lets you change it back to plain text. You then have to acknowledge a dialog
box that helpfully tries to explain that you will lose your formatting
changes if you do this, even though you haven't made any yet.

(Outlook's not very good as an internet e-mail reader. It has too many hats
involving reading e-mails from other sources.)

Cheers,
Paul Drye

Outlook 2000 has the International encoding done in Tools->Options->Mail
Format->International Options.

By default it should reply using the same language codes in the message
unless you have the two check boxes on this page checked forcing English
headers (Or whatever language of office you have). The International
English version of Office Outlook does this a little better. The American
English version operates on the ugly American travelling abroad theory.

The TML CD that Bob <Icantrememberhisnamerightnow> put out has all of the archives back to the very beginning. I can get those things to whoever needs them for the official archives...

OTOH, if everyone _else_ refrains from using HTML/MIME in posting to the TML, then your replies will be in plain text. QED. YMMV.

I said it's sad when the list goes down and I don't. I never said that my
not doing so was a permanent condition.

It's got to do with being in that awkward state referred to as the
Schrodinger Relationship. Until someone says something, you don't know
whether you are in one or not. And nobody wants to say anything lest they
should find out that they're not going to hear the answer they want to
hear.

He is constantly telling me that he thinks I'm smart, cool, talented and
everything. He IM's me at least once or twice a day. He emails me. He
listed me in the acknowledgements of his thesis along with a colleague and
two professors despite the fact that my mathematical knowledge is not
sufficient to balance a checkbook. He made me vice president of his club,
which now is entirely convinced that we're involved. He dances with other
girls at a much bigger distance than he does with me and is afraid to
touch me in front of other people except on the dance floor.

But he hasn't made a move on me yet or said anything that definitively
lets me know he admires more than my brain. I feel like there's something
going on, and I don't want to go out with anybody else anyway.

I think that if I grabbed him firmly with both hands and said "look, I
want you," he would freak the f*** out.

But I am sorely tempted to do exactly that.

Until one of us gets a shot of courage, I am probably not going to have
sex for a while.

Sigh,
Kiri

ObTrav: Even in the far, far future, I suspect this will still be a
problem. I just hope it's one that WE have solved by then.

Hello Everyone:
  OK, OK, OK
Lets ask a relevant question to Travller now!

I here about something called Bay Con in the San Fran, CA area. Is there a
web site to this convention or am I left in the dark?
Also, is there going to be some traveller games there?

Hello Everyone:
  OK, OK, OK
Lets ask a relevant question to Travller now!

I here about something called Bay Con in the San Fran, CA area. Is there
a
web site to this convention or am I left in the dark?
Also, is there going to be some traveller games there?

  John W. Fox

PS: IF it is this Sunday, I already have a Traveller Classic game to go to!

That's why you tie him down first, silly.

Serously, it sounds like he likes you as much as you like him. Go for
it. The last thing you want is an opportunity for happiness to slip away
because you were too afraid to pursue it (believe me, I know).

The Traveller Mailing List is moving. Over the next week, the list will
move from its current home at iEn (lists.ient.com) to its new home at
travellercentral.com. This announcement is intended to highlight this rapid
move, and to note that this change is already reflected in "Traveller on
the Internet" at Freelance Traveller's Information Center.

Our thanks are extended to iEn and Rob Miracle for hosting the list for so
many years, and to Tod Glenn and travellercentral.com for what we hope will
be many more years of the premiere Traveller on-line community.

Answering the second question first, I have no real preference among the
ways I'm about to outline.

Proceeding sorta to the first question, ...

Several lists I am on do as you're currently doing, one digest per day,
regardless of amount of content.

Yahoo! Groups puts out a digest every twenty-five messages, plus one per
day with the surplus.

Another list I'm on, at Topica, puts out a digest every ten messages, with
no 'surplus dump' at the end of the day - anything not issued during the
day is held over until the next time ten messages accumulate.

I believe the MPGN/IENT TML put out a digest whenever the accumulated
content reached about 30K. IIRC, it's majordomo as well.

I think that in the final analysis, the question to ask is what can various
mail readers handle? Mine isn't an issue; Fort Agent seems to be able to
handle just about anything.

I don't think you will - when you send in 2022jp, all that does is make
smart newsreaders presume the Japanese encoding - which seems to allow for
USASCII(at least)-compatible use of the Romaji (Romanji?), thus not causing
problems for smart readers. The problem that Eric was taken to task for
seems to have been sending a _font_file_ to the list - not generally
considered a good idea. Especially on an international list where some of
the members may still be in unenlightened areas that still insist on the
dark ages practice of charging by the amount of data transferred, instead
of a monthly flat rate...

Hmmmm. well it made its way to the digest.

It seams I may have been using the address. I had an address at

got the address book updated with the digest reply to address, lets see

Well, the line was "There is a new list, quick come and see!" But I didn't
want to use the same word to open two successive lines. And you deserve a
little egoboo.

That, and I've always loved "Waltzing Matilda," and wanted to filk it. The
version that closed the Sydney Olympics was the perfect ending, turning a
stadium with over 100,000 people from dozens of nations into a campfire
sing-along.

The con is Memorial Day weekend, at the San Jose Doubletree Inn. We are
getting real close to the 20th anniversary, which should be quite a bash.

> Also, is there going to be some traveller games there?

I'm not aware of anyone actually running a game at this point. BayCon is a
general-interest science fiction con, not an exclusive gaming event. There
are at least a couple of RPG-related panels scheduled, which I'll probably
be on.

There will be the Traveller in SF Party Saturday and Sunday nights. I'll
be bringing _Illuminati_, _Chez Geek_, and _The Extraordinary Adventures of
Baron Munchasen_ but will be too busy playing party host to get involved in
a long game.

On a convention note.. just a reminder that the 2002 World Science Fiction
Convention is in San Jose. Since this is also Traveller's 25th Anniversary,
I'm already planning the party. Jesse: We *will* have the battledress by
that time.. yes?

http://www.conjose.org/

Yes, it's expensive. But Worldcons are worth it!

Sent to both the TML and the TravSF lists.

Howdy!

First, Jeff and Tod: Thanks for trying to do the right thing.
Personally, I think youse guys did nothing wrong.

Given that Rob has unambiguously ceded the reins of the TML,
and given that Tod has the means and the will and the demonstrated
ability to host the list, I don't see where there is much to decide.
Let us move ahead.

yours,
Michael

If set up properly Outlook will ask if which format you wish to send your
message in if you're replying to a HTML post, If you have Plain Text set in
the Options dialog.

your html post was a reply to an html post, It appears that if you
recieve and reply to an html message, your reply is automatically an
html post. I don't use outlook so I can say anything to help.

Jesse try going to the options menu under tools. Under Mail Format pick
Plain Text. Stationary should be grayed out. Make sure MIME is checked and
encoding is set to none. Under international settings make sure the check
boxes are unchecked. I think this will solve the problem.

BTW, using CuteFTP, I finally managed to snag the rest of the files from the

1) What is the name of the subsector that the world Tireen (Knaeleng

2) Likewise, what is the name of the subsector that the world

Here I have them predating the 3rd Imperium

The first offical act of the IISS was to issue a Call For Bids to
augment and replace aging SFSS Type S Scout/Couriers. Due to the size
of the contract, no one shipyard or company could handle the whole
contract. Therefore the initial contract was divided between several
shipyards and design firms. The majority of the contract went to
shipyards that would build new Type S Scouts. But some of the contract
went to firms which designed/built varients. As an example, CRH
Industries recieved a 5% share of the initial 5 year contract for the
following design.

Magellan, Magellan class Scout (FF&S v2)
 Designed by CRH Engineering
Prime Contractor: CRH shipyards (Div of CRH Industries, LIC)
Secondary Contractor: Raagamarmuus Vehicles, Shipyard #2 (Div of CRH
Industries, LIC)

Crew Details
 2xMnvr. 1xGunn.

Note: this ship uses the unofficial fuel in waste space rule.

In compliance with IISS requirements for a versitile Scout/Courier.
This design incorperates both thruster and HEPLAR propulsion. Thruster
is a fuel economic drive but is limited to inner system. In laymans
terms, 2000 solar radii seems to be the limit of effectiveness (1). If
any ship were to exceed this limit it would be a scout ship, therefore,
we include the Heplar drive for out system manuever capibility.
Combined this ship can maintain 2 Gs exceleration for nearly 9 hours
and 1 G indeffinently (2). The hull structure is designed to withstand
3 G's in the thrust axis and 6 G's in a landed gravitational axis or
aerodynamic loading. The airframe configuration and control surfaces
allow the ship to land as a glider(3) even if unpowered. ContraGravity
lifters allow for completely controled landings required by busy
starports.

Birthing for the IISS requirements for minimum crew of 1 and maximum
crew of 8 are handled with 4 large statrooms with an extra fold down
bunk in each. To help the crew on long voyages, a full galley with food
storage (normal quality) for 6 months for 4 people, 4 acceleration seats
which double as galley seating, and a Workout Master 101 collapsable
exercize machine are installed making for a spacious comon area.

IISS specs called for dual sensor/communications packages, a low cost
civilian suite and a dismountable science suite. The science sensor
package includes: 2 folding science grade 16Mkm PEMS, 2 folding science
grade .16Mkm Aems, 1 retractable science grade densitometer, 1 science
grade neutrino sensor, 2 500Mm radios, and 3 1000AU laser comms. The
contract included purchases of models without the dismountable science
suite for courier duties. Models with the science sensors will also
have these removed for detached duty. (for info on the model without
the science sensor see (

Let's just be thankful Bill Gates didn't start up a gun-making business...

Citizen: "Honest, officer, I didn't mean to shoot those people! The
gun just went off all by itself!"

LEO: "That's a MicroSoft OutShoot2000, idiot. It fires automatically
whenever you point it at someone."

Citizen: "B-but I had the safety on!"

LEO: "Don't be stupid. The OutShoot helpfully switches the safety
off, so you don't have to. It assumes that if you hadn't intended to
kill those people, you wouldn't have pointed the weapon at them, see?"

And so on...

Best,

There really isn't any body of water to speak of in the Arba system.
[aside from ice asteroids] Because of this, sonar technology isn't
really well developed:

I need assistance with some landgrab history.

I know from Tarsus and Beltstrike that the Sword Worlds fought the 3I
in the 1st and 2nd Frontier Wars. I also know that they fought in the 4th
Frontier War [Supplement11, on page41 "History of the Spinward
Marches."

Now, in same supplement, in the Library Data listing "Outworld Coalition"
it says this:
"The Sword Worlds have also joined the Coalition at times."

Ok. Which times did they not join? I haven't found any references to SW
partici-P-ation in the 3rd Frontier War. Is this the only time the SW
dropped out?

>To remove yourself from this list, send email

Most spammers put false removal instructions in their emails to take
advantage of the screwy legislation enacted by the U.S Congress (opposite
of Progress). Some utilize the strings "to be removed" and "to remove" as
(very effective) spam filters, because of this. Thus, it may be best to
change the above to "To unsubscribe from this list..."
